Jean Elsen sale 138, lot 579

This specimen was lot 579 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €230 (about US$319 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIEGE, Principauté, Jean de Hornes (1485-1505), AV florin d'or postulat. D/ + IOHS DE HORN EPS LEODIE Ecu à la croix chargée d'un écusson de Hornes, dans un trilobe anglé. R/ SANCTVS- LAMBERTV' Saint Lambert deb. de f., bénissant et ten. une crosse. Beau à Très Beau. (prince-bishopric of Liège, John of Hoorn, 1485-1505, undated gold florin. Obverse: shield charged with the escutcheon of Hoorn within an angled trilobe; reverse: St. Lambert, holding a cross and giving a blessing. Fine to very fine.)"

This type was also struck when Jean was merely bishop-elect (Fr-299). We would include it in our list of gold ducats of Europe but it is too light.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: gold, this specimen 1,95 g.

Catalog reference: Chestret 386; Dengis 768; Delm-333, Fr-300.
