Heritage sale 3064, lot 33249

This specimen was lot 33249 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[1] noted, "British India. George VI Proof 1/2 Anna 1947(c) PR65 Cameo PCGS, Calcutta mint. A brilliant piece with a strong cameo contrast. This is currently the only proof cameo example certified by PCGS. In PR63, this type is listed at $1,200 in Krause." The half anna was not introduced as a circulating denomination until 1940 when it was issued as a copper-nickel coin. It was converted to nickel-brass and struck in large numbers 1942-45 and again in copper-nickel 1946-47. This proof version is rare.

Recorded mintage: 126,392,000 plus proofs and restrikes.

Specification: 2.87 g, copper-nickel. The Bombay mint issue (KM 535.1) was pure nickel.
