Sedwick sale 27, lot 1156

This specimen was lot 1156 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $2,856. The catalog description[1] noted, "Calcutta, India (British), copper-nickel original proof 1 anna, George VI, 1947, short trefoils in crown, very rare, PCGS PR64. Diagonal streaks of light magenta and teal toning over muted luster, tied with one other for finest known in PCGS census (highest at NGC being PF 62). PCGS #38543717. With original His Majesty's Mint paper envelope." This anna (1/16 of a rupee) was struck in the final days of the British Raj. This type was struck 1946-47 at Bombay, Lahore and Calcutta and is common. Only the proofs are rare.
