Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71231

This specimen was lot 71231 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/4 Anna, 1907-(C). Calcutta Mint. Edward VII. PCGS MS-65 Red. Showcasing rich coppery red surfaces that are illuminated with sweeping luster and demonstrate hints of magenta and cobalt tone when illuminated. Intriguingly, signs of rather powerful die clashing can be witnessed in the fields. A gorgeous Gem that will satisfy any specialist." This quarter anna was struck at the Calcutta mint 1906-10. The weight was reduced from 6.48 g in 1906 and thence to 4.72 g in 1909. A quarter anna was one sixty fourth of a rupee.

Recorded mintage: 234,382,000 + proofs, all without mintmark.

Specification: 4.83 g, bronze, 25.3 mm diameter.
