Stephen Album sale 47, lot 986

This specimen was lot 986 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH INDIA: Edward VII, 1901-1910, AE 1/12 anna, 1905(c), very likely an original proof strike and thus rare, PCGS graded Proof 63 BN." This one twelfth anna was the smallest denomination struck in India during the British Raj. Sixteen annas made a rupee, so 192 of these made a rupee. This type was struck 1903-06, then converted to bronze 1906-10 with a weight reduction. All seem to be products of the Calcutta mint. The denomination was discontinued in 1942. Restrikes in silver exist of this date.

Recorded mintage: 13,060,000 plus proofs.

Specification: copper, 17.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-497, S&W-7.217.
