Kunker sale 293, lot 1653

This specimen was lot 1653 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €24,000 (about US$32,347 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Franz II. 1792-1804. Konv.-Taler 1792, A, Wien, für Ungarn. Königstaler. Zwei Engel halten Krone über das zweifeldige Wappen, unten Lorbeer- und Palmzweig gekreuzt//Madonna mit Krone und Zepter sitzt v. v. auf Wolken, auf dem Schoß hat sie das Kind, das einen Reichsapfel hält und die Linke emporhebt. Mit Randschrift: LEGE ET FIDE, dazwischen Blumenornamente. Von großer Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar. Erstabschlag. Feine Patina, winz. Kratzer, fast Stempelglanz. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis II, 1792-1804, convention thaler of 1792, Vienna mint, struck for Hungary. Obverse: two angels support a crown over the arms of Hungary, laurel and palm wreaths below; reverse: Madonna and Child on a cloud. Very rare, cabinet piece, first strike, fine patina, minor scratches, about uncirculated.)"

This type, one of several religious themed thalers, was struck 1792 only and is rare.
