Upon separating from the Empire of Mexico in 1823, Honduras joined the Central American Republic (1823-1839). The earliest independent coinage was of a provisional nature, lasting two years. The specimen shown was lot 1389 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONDURAS. Provisional Government. Real, (18)23-T.L. Mule, reverse struck with 2 Reales die. Toned. VERY FINE."
