SB825-41460r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1013 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "Tegucigalpa, Honduras, provisional "imitation cob" 2 reales, 1823-PMPY, with quadrants of cross transposed and retrograde lions, trefoils above pillars, rare, PCGS AU 55. Full, bold and well-centered pillars side with clear date, the cross off-center and with weakly punched interiors but clear second date and Y to right, lightly toned with underlying luster." Numerous varieties exist of this crude, handmade issue. One, half and four reales were also made as Honduras struggled to free herself from Guatemalan domination. The second specimen was lot 41460 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[2] noted, "NICARAGUA. Cob 2 Reales, 1823. Leon Mint. NGC AU-55. Variety with "pine tree style" pillars. Featuring pillars that terminate differently than the more commonly encountered "owl head style" pillars, this RARER variant offers great overall quality and a pleasing strike for the issue. Ex: Richard Stuart Collection."

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: debased silver, the first specimen 5.74 g, the second specimen 6.65 g.
