Honduras 1825-T NR 2 reales
Two reales were struck intermittently at Tegucigalpa, Honduras, during 1825-32. This particular type comes unusually crude, even for Honduras. Various types of debased silver were issued until 1854. All are scarce and rare in nice condition. The second specimen was lot 31125 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $1,860. The catalog description[1] noted, "Central American Republic Provisional 2 Reales 1825 T-NR VF30 NGC, Tegucigalpa mint. An extremely attractive and presentable example of this rare provisional coinage series, struck at both San Jose and Tegucigalpa and with different magistrates. This particular combination, however, is the one which can be obtained, as the others are all extremely rare. Highly collectible in any grade, though even more given the fairly problem free surfaces and broad flan for issue. A comparable example, also an NGC VF30, but with a bit more of an unattractive, mottled tone, realized a hammer of $1,100 in our 2015 NYINC auction (sale 3038, lot 35433)." This date was also struck in San José, Costa Rica.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 10 (listed under Central American Republic).
