Stack's Bowers November 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 78249
SB1125-78249r.jpg

This specimen was lot 78249 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Holland. Lion Dollar (Daalder), 1621. Dordrecht Mint. PCGS EF-45. From the Richard August Collection." The auctioneers incorrectly call this a lion daalder, it is actually a Nederlandse rijksdaalder. This type of 1606-93 evolved from the "prince's daalder" (Dav-8841) of the prior century. The type is listed fairly inexpensively in low grade but is very scarce in nice condition. These were generally weakly struck on bad planchets. Holland also struck leeuwendaalders throughout the seventeenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29.03 g, 0.885 fine silver, 42 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-4831, KM-18.
