Holland 1623 cavalier d'or Fr-251
This specimen was lot 31260 in Heritage Sale 3115 (Chicago, May 2024), where it sold for $16,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: Holland. Provincial gold Cavalier d'Or (Gold Rider) 1623 MS62 NGC, Dordrecht mint, A wonderful Holland variety of this famed gold emission, featuring a date that we do not believe has been offered at public auction in internet history. This inspiring type (and its fractional variants) are much more commonly seen as issues from other Dutch provinces, such as Gelderland and Utrecht. A beautiful and fully-deserving Mint State selection flaunting a lustrous golden-amber shimmer and a well-centered, evenly detailed strike. From the Coenen Collection." The catalog calls this coin a "gold rider," a term American numismatists reserve for the similar coin of the eighteenth century valued at fourteen gulden. The province of Holland struck this type 1606-08, 1621-25, 1629 and 1632. All dates scarce to rare. Other provinces struck cavaliers d'or as well but the type was abandoned in favor of the ducat after the mid-seventeenth century.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 10 g, 0.920 fine gold, this specimen 9.94 g.
