Hannover 1765-IAP 24 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74571 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1765-IAP. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg III (George III of Great Britain). PCGS AU-55. KM-347; Welter-2812. Illuminated by plentiful mint luster, attractive gunmetal-gray toning can be found on both sides. The strike is fairly sharp with full centers and only a hint of weakness in the reverse legend. A survivor that is sure to attract collector demand due to its originality and excellent overall preservation. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1762-84 for George III and reverts to the 24 mariengroschen denomination after two-thirds thalers were struck for George II. We also note KM 341 (shield/value) for 1765.
