Hannover 1713-HH 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74640 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 12 Mariengroschen, 1713. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: crossed axes between HH. Georg Ludwig (future George I of Great Britain). PCGS AU-55. A fairly RARE type, this charming minor does display some handling upon the higher points, but offers a delightful iridescence around the wildman and retains some elegant brilliance around the legends. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type of 1712-15, about the last of this denomination struck in this state, has a low catalog value. It was replaced by the ⅓ thaler, a coin of the same value. George Ludwig was promoted to king of England on the death of his cousin Anne Stuart in 1714. This is the period when the electorate ceased to be known as Brunswick-Luneburg and called Hannover instead.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
