Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 51111

This specimen was lot 51111 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1949. London Mint. George VI. PCGS PROOF-65 Cameo. Scottish reverse. The only example of the type in the PCGS census with the 'cameo' distinction, this shimmering Gem offers nearly flawless fields and a hint of amber-champagne color augmenting its already strong appeal." This type was struck 1949-51. It was the second copper-nickel shilling and dropped "IND:IMP" from the reverse legend. Another shilling, KM 876, was struck with the English crest on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: 21,243,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 5.65 g, copper nickel, 23.5 mm diameter, reeded edge.
