Great Britain 1937 florin
This specimen was lot 21240 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $2,185. The catalog description[1] noted, "George VI Matte Proof Florin 1937, Matte PF63 NGC, particularly choice and nice looking, with only slight variance from how it must have appeared when struck, listed in the SCBC as being "of highest rarity" in this state. An enchanting modern rarity!" This type was struck 1937-46 in substantial numbers and no date is rare. It was converted to copper-nickel in 1947 and struck until the end of sterling coinage in 1970. It survived the transition to decimal coinage as a ten pence piece but was finally demonetized in 1992.
Recorded mintage: 13,007,000 plus 26,000 proofs plus a few matte proofs.
