This specimen was part of lot 51136 in Heritage sale 440 (Long Beach, May 2007), which sold for $218.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Choice tiny Victorians: Quarter Farthing 1852, Choice Unc. with intriguing, beautiful reddish brown toning; Third Farthing 1885, Choice golden red Unc., a beauty; Half Farthing 1844, S-3951, red and brown Unc." This type was struck sporadically 1866-85 and circulated mostly in the colonies. Its face value, 1/2880 of a pound, was too low to be useful in Britain proper. It is quite a bit more available than the similar quarter farthing.
Recorded mintage: 288,000.
Specification: bronze.
