This specimen was part of lot 51136 in Heritage sale 440 (Long Beach, May 2007), which sold for $218.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Choice tiny Victorians: Quarter Farthing 1852, Choice Unc. with intriguing, beautiful reddish brown toning; Third Farthing 1885, S-3960, Choice golden red Unc., a beauty; Half Farthing 1844, S-3951, red and brown Unc." This type was struck 1839 and 1851-53 but it circulated in the colonies such as Ceylon rather than in Britain proper. Its face value was 1/3840 of a sovereign. Today the type is not rare but brings a good price because of its popularity among collectors.

Recorded mintage: 2,215,000 for 1851-52.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: S.3953, KM 737.
