This specimen was lot 20377 in Ponterio sale 176 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $441. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Victoria, 1837-1901. Sovereign, 1852. NGC AU-53. First young head left. Rv. Crowned shield flanked by wreaths. An earlier date that is scarce in high grades. Ex: Farber, 1973." This type was struck 1838-72 in large quantities with a slightly modified obverse continuing until 1874. Despite the large mintages, the type is scarce in nice condition.
