Great Britain 1851 4 pence

from the Mountain Groan Collection

This silver four pence or "groat" was struck during the reign of Victoria, queen of Britain 1837-1901. The type was struck 1838-1887 only for the Maundy sets. The regular circulation issues, struck 1838-55, featured Britannia seated on the reverse. As most Maundy sets were carefully preserved by their recipients, Maundy coins are today much more available than the low mintage would indicate.

Recorded mintage: 4,158 struck for Maundy sets plus 31,000 (KM 731.1, Britannia reverse) struck for circulation.

Specification: 1.88 g, 0.925 fine silver, .056 troy oz ASW.
