Ponterio sale 168, lot 40155

This specimen was lot 40155 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 1849. PCGS MS-62. Secure Holder. Lustrous and attractive. Ex: Douro Cargo." This bust was used on the sovereign, or one pound coin, 1838-64 with a slightly modified type (KM 736.2) extending until 1874. This date is reasonably available.

Recorded mintage: 2,247,000.

Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold.
