Great Britain 1849 4 pence
This specimen was lot 2283 in Goldberg sale 81 (Los Angeles, September 2014), where it sold for $282. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Groat, 1849. Victoria. Currency issue. With golden green iridescent tone, this coin is normally encountered in low grade. A stunning piece and excessively rare in top grade. NGC graded MS-66." This four pence or groat was struck for circulation 1838-55, after which the denomination was abandoned. The Maundy sets used a four pence with a different reverse 1838-87. The groat was an important coin in late medieval times but was displaced by the sixpence during the reign of Elizabeth I.
