Great Britain 1885 florin

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 23070

This specimen was lot 23070 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $840. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Florin, 1885. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder. Sharply struck with silky luster and light toning." This type was struck 1848-87 in reasonable quantities in an attempt to decimalize the currency (one pound = ten florins). This subtype was issued 1877-87.

Recorded mintage: 1,758,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 11.31 g, 0.925 fine silver, .336 troy oz ASW, 28.3 mm diameter.
