Great Britain 1696-y shilling
This specimen was lot 72024 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1696-Y. York Mint. William III. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. First bust. A fairly SCARCE branch mint type, this handsome specimen exhibits some typical minor striking weakness and light wear, but also features an attractive cabinet tone with some underlying luster and peripheral iridescence. Unsurprisingly, the finest certified by PCGS. From the Regent Crest Collection." This type was struck 1696-97 during the great recoinage supervised by Sir Isaac Newton. Branch mints, including York, were temporarily opened to speed the work. We also note KM 485.7 with the mintmark of a capital Y.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
