Great Britain 1697 shilling
This specimen was lot 264 in Spink sale 9031 (London, November 2009). The catalog description[1] noted, "William III, Shilling, 1697, laureate draped third bust right, rev. four crowned shields cruciform, extensive as struck lustre, weak in places on reverse, good extremely fine." The early issues (1692-93) of William III show him conjoined with his queen, Mary II; after her death he is portrayed alone. Several branch mints issued this type but this specimen is from London. The type was struck 1695-1701 with many variants, Lobel et al[2] show six obverses and 67 varieties.
