This specimen was lot 71224 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Empire. 5 Pfennig, 1910-G. Karlsruhe Mint. Wilhelm II. PCGS PROOF-65 Cameo Gold Shield. This tremendous Gem proof issue presents a steely gray hue and great brilliance, all while employing a pleasing cameo nature on each side. For completeness, a minor print is noted on the obverse." This coin is a copper-nickel five pfennig from a type issued 1890-1915 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Munich (mintmark "D"), Muldenhutten (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G", shown here) and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted to the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. Wartime shortages forced the regime to convert the coin to iron in 1915-22.

Recorded mintage: 1,222,000, a better date.

Specification: 2.5 g, copper-nickel, 18 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-11; J-12.
