This specimen was lot 580 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 100 Franc Piefort, 1985. NGC PROOF-68 ULTRA CAMEO. Struck to commemorate the centennial of Emile Zola's novel 'Germinal'. Deep mirror fields with frosted devices." This type was also struck in silver (KM 957 and KM 957a) and is much more available in that form.

Recorded mintage: 5,000.

Specification: 17 g., .920 fine gold, 0.502 troy oz AGW.
