Goldberg sale 69, lot 4696

This specimen was lot 4696 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it did not sell. It was offered again in Goldberg sale 70 as lot 3997, where it also failed to sell. The catalog description ^[2] noted, "France. Franc, 1824-W (Lille). Louis XVIII. Beautifully toned example with great eye appeal. NGC graded MS-64." This type was struck during the reign of Louis XVIII (1815-24) from numerous mints. The specimen shown is from Lille and is a common date. Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All 2 francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.

Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.
