Heritage sale 3076, lot 31461

This specimen was lot 31461 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description^[1] noted, "France. Louis XVIII 2 Francs 1823-A MS65+ NGC, Paris mint. Simply superb, with blue and gold tones each dominating their respective areas of the obverse, creating a unique and captivating juxtaposition of color. At gem "plus" certification, this example remains the finest seen by either NGC or PCGS to-date. From the Allen Moretti Swiss Collection." This type was struck during the reign of Louis XVIII from numerous mints. The specimen shown is from Paris and Le Franc^[2] reports this as a slightly scarce date. Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.

Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.
