France 1823-I 1/4 franc
This specimen was lot 24559 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XVIII 1/4 Franc 1823-I, MS63 NGC, attractive silvery-gray patina with well-struck features, rare low mintage date/mint (1,870 struck). Listed, and pictured, on the web site of CGB (the publisher of the catalogue LeFranc, in their Collection Ideale as the finest known of this date and mint. It is incorrectly listed there as AU58." This specimen is one of a type struck 1817-24 at eleven mints in France. Despite this, only 640,000 were produced over the type's eight year span and most dates are rare. This date is rare.
Specification: 1.25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 15 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Auguste Michaut.
