This specimen was lot 23855 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XVIII 5 Francs 1823-L, Bayonne, MS65 NGC, a choice and fully original piece with full mint bloom and gorgeous gold, blue-green and russet patina. Rarely seen in this exceptional quality." Many of the 96 dates of this French type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade.

Recorded mintage: 897,595 (a better date).

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879, this specimen 25.1 grams.
