France 1824-D 2 francs

Jean Elsen sale 123, lot 942

This specimen was lot 942 in Jean Elsen sale 123 (Brussels, December 2014), where it sold for €165 (about US$240 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, seconde restauration (1815-1824), AR 2 francs, 1824 D, Lyon. Très Beau. (France, Louis XVIII, second restoration (1815-24), silver two francs of 1824, Lyon mint, very fine.)"

Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All French two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.

Recorded mintage: 99,585 plus 8,388 made with a reversed mintmark^[1]. The regular issue is somewhat scarce, the reversed "D" is rare (three known).

Specification: 27 mm diameter, 10 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.
