France 1824-W 1/4 franc
This specimen was lot 26955 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $485.28. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XVIII 1/4 Franc 1824-W, MS64 NGC. Deeply toned in variegated multicolored hues. A choice specimen." This tiny coin was struck at Toulouse under the régime of king Louis XVIII (1814-24). It is from a type struck for France 1817-24. Unlike Napoleonic quarter francs, which are divided among six types, all quarter francs of this reign are of this type, which is fairly common. The catalog[1] notes 35 dates for the type, some very rare, and notes some specimens of this date are known with medal rotation. This issue is scarce, priced four times the Paris mint issue.
Recorded mintage: 10,542[2].
Specification: 1.25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 15 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: KM 714.11, F.163/35.
