Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 52172

This specimen was lot 52172 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $2,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Bearn. 2 Louis d'Or, 1753. Pau Mint; mm: cow. Louis XV. PCGS AU-55. A SCARCE and desirable provincial issue, this lightly handled example retains elegant and enchanting brilliance upon each side along with offering a strong strike." Droulers lists Pau mint issues for 1742-45, 1750-70 with some of the mintages from the sixties being quite substantial.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28-29 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.
