This specimen was lot 31401 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Louis XV gold 2 Louis d'Or 1754-I AU58 NGC, Limoges mint. An exceedingly tough date and mintmark combination witnessed at the cusp of a Mint State designation, currently ranking as NGC's lone specimen. Exhibiting mellowed appearances and fully struck up devices punctuated by a flash of brilliance to the protected regions, we anticipate fervent interest when crossing the auction block." This type was struck 1742-73 in some numbers but the Limoges mint issued this type 1744-47, 1749-57, 1760-71 only. Altho other mints (notably Strasbourg) struck many double louis to pay troops fighting in Germany during the War of the Austrian Succession, all issues of this mint are rare.

Recorded mintage: 1,439[2].

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 792, Dr/2 № 542, Duplessy 1642; Fr-463, KM 519.8, Gad-346 (R4).
