Sincona sale 26, lot 3056

This specimen was lot 3056 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$679 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Königreich, Louis XV. 1715-1774 ½ Louis dor à la vieille tête 1753. A, Paris. Selten. Schön-sehr schön (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, demi-louis d'or of the old head (sic) of 1753, Paris mint. Scarce, fine to very fine.)"

This is not a half louis d'or à la vielle tête, of which the only known date is 1772-A, but a half louis d'or au bandeau, of a type struck 1740-70, mostly at Paris. This specimen may be an overdate, 1753/1, but this type is too rare to award a premium to varieties.

Recorded mintage: 4,119[2].

Specification: 4.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, reeded edge; this specimen 4.06 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 809, Dr/2 № 544, Gad-330, Fr-465.
