France 1753-W 1/10 ecu

Jean Elsen sale 90, lot 1187

This coin, called a dixième d'écu au bandeau, was the French equivalent of a dime. It was lot 1187 in Jean Elsen sale 90 (Brussels, December 2006), where it did not sell. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the dixième d'écu = 12 sols. The type was struck 1740-71 and is recorded for the Paris mint ("A") for most of those years. This issue is from Lille (mintmark "W") and is priced^[1] about double the commonest date (1751-A).

Specification: 2.95 g, 0.917 fine silver, 22 mm diameter.
