Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 1091

This specimen was lot 1091 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1723-W. Lille Mint. Louis XV. NGC MS-62. Boldly struck and with original dark golden surfaces, the current example comes from an original recorded mintage of 59,000 pieces, and is the sole finest graded by NGC." The specimen shown is a louis d'or Mirliton, palmes courtes, struck at the Lille mint (mintmark "W") during the minority of king Louis XV. This type was struck 1723 only but from twenty-seven mints. It would be extremely rare but for a quantity recovered in 1965 from the wreck of Le Chameau, a French troopship discovered off the coast of Nova Scotia. This type was superseded by the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes longues, struck 1723-25. That coin in turn was superseded by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.

Recorded mintage: 58,758 including a few louis d'or Mirliton, palmes longues[2].

Specification: 6.52 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
