This specimen was lot 99146 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Extremely Rare Date and Mint Combination, Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1723-Y MS61 NGC, Bourges mint. Short palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. Bearing deeply-engraved devices, dressed in a pale-gold tone, this rarity represents the sole example certified by the two major grading companies. Records from Parke-Bernet's 1971 sale of the Le Chameau cargo recovered in 1965 contained only 3 Bourges-minted Louis d'Or Mirliton of all mints, all from 1724. To the best of our knowledge, no other examples of this mint-date have come to auction since the sale of this piece in 2006, establishing what is likely a one-of-a-kind opportunity for series collectors. Ex. John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII (Stack's January 2006, Lot 411)." The specimen shown is a louis d'or Mirliton, palmes courtes, struck at the Bourges mint (mintmark "Y") during the minority of king Louis XV. This type was struck 1723 only but from twenty-seven mints. It would be extremely rare but for a quantity recovered in 1965 from the wreck of Le Chameau, a French troopship discovered off the coast of Nova Scotia. This type was superseded by the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes longues, struck 1723-25. That coin in turn was superseded by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.

Recorded mintage: 4,000 plus a few louis d'or aux 2 L.

Specification: 6.52 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
