This specimen was lot 99121 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1723-C AU58 NGC, Caen mint. Short palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau Shipwreck. Expressing well-defined motifs and a sun-gold tone across the fields. Unusual to find without serious evidence of saltwater damage, and reportedly one of only two 1723 Caen examples recovered from the cargo of the ship in 1965. Sunk off the cost of Nova Scotia in 1725, the Le Chameau was transporting supplies to the New France (Canada), making a routine voyage when a storm blew it onto rocks. An unsuccessful attempt to recover the cargo was made in 1726, with the trove only being discovered in 1965, becoming one of the most substantial treasures ever found in the country. Ex. John J. The specimen shown is a louis d'or Mirliton, palmes courtes, struck at the Caen mint (mintmark "C") during the minority of king Louis XV. This type was struck 1723 only but from twenty-seven mints. It would be extremely rare but for a quantity recovered in 1965 from the wreck of Le Chameau, a French troopship discovered off the coast of Nova Scotia. This type was superseded by the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes longues, struck 1723-25. That coin in turn was superseded by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.

Recorded mintage: 41,931 plus a few louis d'or aux 2 L.

Specification: 6.52 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
