This specimen was lot 99190 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Extremely Rare Mint-Date Combination, Missing from the 1971 Parke-Bernet Sale, Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1724-)( AU Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Besançon mint. Large palms variety. From the 1725 Le Chameau shipwreck. Exhibiting fully defined devices, with few adjustment marks over pale-gold fields showing minor encrustations. A pleasing rarity, displaying bold motifs, with few adjustment marks, dressed in sun-gold toning. Much more elusive than Gadoury might suggest; the only other example of which we are aware is the Donald G. Partrick specimen, which certified at an UNC Details. Ex. John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XII (Stack's January 2006, Lot 449)." The specimen shown is a louis d'or Mirliton, grandes palmes, struck at the Grenoble mint (mintmark "Z") during the minority of king Louis XV. This type was struck 1723-25 only but from twenty-eight mints. It would be extremely rare but for a quantity recovered in 1965 from the wreck of Le Chameau, a French troopship discovered off the coast of Nova Scotia. This type superseded the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes courtes, struck 1723 only, and was superseded in turn by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.

Recorded mintage: 39,600.

Specification: 6.52 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
