Sincona sale 46, lot 356

This specimen was lot 356 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,320 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Louis XV. 1715-1774. Louis dor mirliton 1724 A, Paris. Gutes sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, louis d'or Mirliton of 1724, Paris mint. Good very fine.)"

This type superseded the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes courtes, struck in 1723, and was replaced by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck in large quantities 1726-40. Despite the substantial mintage, this type is very scarce.

Reported Mintage: 466,800, highest for type.

Specification: 6.52 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge; this specimen 6.54 g.
