Sincona sale 77, lot 2264

The first specimen was lot 1863 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,774 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XV, 1715-1774. Ecu de France 1724, V, Troyes. Réformation. Prachtexemplar. Justiert, fast Stempelglanz. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, écu of France of 1724, Troyes mint, reformed. Prooflike, adjustment marks, about uncirculated.)"

The second specimen was lot 2264 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 2,600 CHF (about US$3,156 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted,

"FRANCE | Kingdom. Louis XV. 1715-1774. Ecu de France 1724 V, Troyes. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. NGC MS64. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, écu of France, 1724, Troyes mint. Very rare, especially in this condition.)"

This is an écu au grand écusson de France of the Troyes mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. Droulers[1] notes the type as rather scarce but more available than the succeeding écu aux 8 L of 1724-25. The type was issued 1720-24.

Recorded mintage: 60,714 on new blanks plus 66,654 of the écu aux 8 L (very rare).

Specification: 24.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, .722 troy oz ASW, 38 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
