Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 20124
SB121-20124r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20124 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1725-P. Dijon Mint. Louis XV. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. This sharply struck and attractive example of the two-year type from the sought after Dijon mint exhibits crisp frosty devices with lustrous surfaces displaying lovely light mottled patina giving it a pleasing appearance." This is an écu aux 8 L of the Dijon mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. Droulers[2] notes the type as rather scarce as most were melted in the great reform of 1726. A number were recovered from the wreck of Le Chameau but most were corroded. This type is the lowest weight écu struck during the reign of Louis XV. This date obtains about a 45% premium over the 1725-A.

Recorded mintage: "très peu"[2].

Specification: 23.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, .695 troy oz ASW, 38-39 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 818, Dr/2 № 574, Dav-1329; KM-472.16; Gad-320.
