Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74671
SB1024-74671r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74671 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/8 Ecu, 1725-B. Rouen Mint. Louis XV. NGC G-4. This well worn minor issue displays light attractive gray tone." This coin, called a huitième d'écu aux 8 L, is the only issue of this denomination struck during the reign of Louis XV. After 1726, tenth écus were struck to this weight and this coin probably circulated as such but it is rare today. Quarter, half and one écus were also struck to this design 1724-25, the last before Cardinal Fleury's reform of 1726 stabilized the coinage. While this type is well attested in the French literature, it is entirely missing from the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: 41,852, a common date of a scarce type.

Specification: 2.95 g, 0.917 fine silver, 21 mm diameter, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 846, Dr/2 № 577, KM unlisted, Gad-294; Dupl-1673.
