This specimen was lot 99208 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Seemingly Unpublished Bourges Mint Louis d'Or, Louis XV gold Louis d'Or Mirliton 1725-Y UNC Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Bourges mint. Long palms variety. Highly covetable as a Mirliton issue from Bourges, but especially so having no instances of this date and mintmark combination published in the major French references. No other example has come up for sale since this coin's first showing in the Ford Collection, whose listing states that this was altogether missing from the 1971 Parke-Bernet auction of Le Chameau shipwreck issues. Ex. John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII (Stack's January 2006, Lot 455)." The specimen shown is a louis d'or Mirliton, grandes palmes, struck at the Bourges mint (mintmark "Y") during the minority of king Louis XV. This type was struck 1723-25 only but from twenty-eight mints. It would be extremely rare but for a quantity recovered in 1965 from the wreck of Le Chameau, a French troopship discovered off the coast of Nova Scotia. This type superseded the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes courtes, struck 1723 only, and was superseded in turn by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.

Recorded mintage: 22,000.

Specification: 6.52 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
