Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74670

This specimen was lot 74670 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/3 Ecu, 1723-(9). Rennes Mint. Louis XV. NGC AU-55. This handsome little minor coin exhibits a bold strike with even wear. The surfaces display attractive rich gray patina with hints of iridescence." The type was struck 1720-23 in large numbers while the adventurer John Law dominated the French government. Many were struck over petit louis d'argent struck in 1720. This date is unusual in that it is known only on new blanks.

Recorded mintage: 1,990,330, a common date of a common mint.

Specification: 8.15 g, 0.917 fine silver, 26-28 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
