Sincona sale 54, lot 349

This specimen was lot 349 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$774 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Frankreich, konigreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Louis dor à la mèche longue 1653 P, Dijon. Gutes sehr schön. Justiert. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the long lock of 1653, Dijon mint. Good very fine, Adjustment marks.)"

This louis d'or à la mèche longue, struck at the Dijon mint 1650-53, is among the more available louis of Louis XIV. It is still an expensive coin, particularly as this is a better mint. The Dijon mint would not issue gold again until 1690.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, this specimen 6.65 g.
