Sincona sale 54, lot 348

This specimen was lot 348 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 900 CHF (about US$1,071 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Frankreich, konigreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Louis dor à la mèche longue 1652 D, Lyon. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the long lock of 1652, Lyon mint. Very fine.)"

This louis d'or à la mèche longue, struck at the Lyon mint 1652-54, 1657-59, is among the more available louis of Louis XIV of France. It is still an expensive coin, particularly as this is a better mint.

Recorded mintage: 20,396 plus 2,479 louis d'or à la mèche courte[1].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, this specimen 6.65 g.
