France 1587-M 1/4 ecu
This specimen was lot 6791 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/4 Ecu, 1587-M. Toulouse Mint. Henri III. PCGS AU-55. Variety with 'BENEDICTVM' in the obverse legend, and the king's name on the reverse. A bright and largely untoned coin, crudely struck but with complete central design and peripheral legend visible." This specimen was struck by the hammer at Toulouse during the reign of Henry III, last of the Valois dynasty. The Tours, Poitiers and Troyes mints switched the obverse/reverse legends vs. other mints. After production of the franc d'argent was suspended in 1586, this was the largest silver coin regularly struck prior to the introduction of milled coinage in the 1640's. It had a face value of fifteen sols tournois. Toulouse struck this type 1587-88 only and is a scarce mint.
Recorded mintage: 290,531, including a few eighth écus.
Specification: 9.71 g, 0.917 fine silver.
