France 1587-E ecu d'or Fr-388

Jean Elsen sale 123, lot 753

This specimen was lot 753 in Jean Elsen sale 123 (Brussels, December 2014), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,163 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Henri III (1574-1589), AV écu d'or au soleil, 1587 E, Tours. Au titre de roi de Pologne. Droit: Ecu de France couronné, sous un soleil. La légende débutant en haut. Revers: Croix fleurdelisée, un quadrilobe en coeur. Rare. Léger défaut de flan à d. de l'écu. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Henry III (1574-89), gold écu d'or of the sun of 1587, Tours mint, with the title of king of Poland. Obverse: crowned arms of France below a sunburst. The legend begins at the top. Reverse: floriate cross with the mintmark in a quadrilobe. Rare, light planchet defect at the base of the shield, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy^[2] with a face value of sixty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends. On this one, the obverse legend starts at the top, by the sunburst. This type was the standard gold coin of France prior to the introduction of the milled louis d'or in 1641.
